Getting started
I sometimes do gadget repairs on some of my (or my son's) devices. You can see my last repair (a Moto 360 smartwatch battery replacement) in another post here. This time, I ordered an iPhone 6 screen replacement from Amazon (see links at the bottom of this post) for my son's aging iPhone 6 with a cracked screen.
First minor issue
The replacement went very well although not without hiccups. The main issue I had was seeing only two cables on the replacement screen while there are four on the original iPhone 6. If you continue through the well-done instructions, you will see that two of the cables actually come from the original camera and the original metal plate behind the screen. The original iPhone 6 contains both of these items. The photos don't show the 3rd and 4th cables on the original iPhone 6. Once I figured out that the 2nd two cables are from my original iPhone 6, everything went very well.
Contents of the iPhone screen replacement kit
The contents of the iPhone replacement screen kit can be seen in one of the photos. The included tools were very helpful and the instructions were well written. The best thing was probably the magnetic map with a picture of where all the screws go so that you don't lose them. That was something I had never experienced, although I have replaced screens and done similar repair work before. It was quite impressive.
Difficulties
One of my difficulties was that my son's iPhone 6 glass screen was pretty badly cracked. I had to make adjustments because the glass actually came off the screen when I was trying to pull off only a connector or something similar. You can see the replacement screen installed on my son's iPhone 6 and the old screen with pieces of glass missing in the photos.
The end result was great!
The end result was quite a change. In the photo showing the end result next to the old screen, you can really see the difference. My son was very happy with the outcome. He told me that some other problems he was having were actually fixed after the replacement. With the cracked screen, he could no longer have a normal phone call. He had to use the speakerphone. The new screen fixed that. He also said at least one game that used to crash consistently no longer crashes with the new screen.
One minor subpar after-effect
The only issue we've seen which is somewhat minor is that the screen seems a little dimmer than the original screen. Doing a quick Google search on iPhone 6 screen replacements, this seems to be at least somewhat common. Otherwise, everything is working perfectly. It's like my son got a brand new phone. I bought him a new screen protector and a new case to further make it seem like he had a new phone.
