I have an older smartwatch, a Moto 360 1st edition. I really liked it when I first got it. It eventually started acting strangely. It appeared to charge all the way and then the battery drained extremely quickly. Sometimes it simply wouldn't charge to 100%. Finally, it stopped working altogether. I didn't really know that at the time that it was the battery because often you think it's just some sort of software glitch. It didn't take that long for the battery to die; what seemed to me a shorter life than most tech gadgets I owned. It was actually surprising how short of life it had considering it was from a respectable company, Motorola. Maybe a year at most.
I was disappointed but don't expect a lot from most technology that is out there today. I put it in a drawer and kept it because I thought I might find a way to resell it later. I often resell my technology because I take care of them so well and get a decent price for them.
Revisiting my Moto 360
I came across some hard financial times and as I do so often, I looked to gadgets that keep me interested and slightly busy. I also look towards things that can move me forward in productivity. So I revisited this watch and tried to figure out what I could do with it.
Replacing the battery
As is usually the case, there were already YouTube videos on how to replace the non-user-replaceable battery in the Moto 360 first generation watch. I followed one of them and was able to find a replacement battery and then replace it myself with little effort. The only problem was that I cracked the plastic backing of the watch that looks like it is quality metal, which it isn't. Nobody sees the back so it wasn't a problem. I also put one side of the watch band on upside down but it was difficult enough that I decided to just leave it that way.
I'm currently wearing the watch and love that I got more life out of this watch than most people probably did. It's unfortunate that Motorola didn't put a little more effort into making this product last longer. Google doesn't seem all that interested in Android Wear when you compare it to both Apple watches and Samsung Watches.
